There’s a cool type of club you find in the eastern parts of the US that you don’t find in the west where I live. Basement clubs. There’s just something about the vibe of a cool club in the basement of a building. It’s the right feel for both great comedy and music. We’ve got…
Here’s where I was donning the red shirt while performing at Jokers Comedy Club in Cedar Falls, IA. The club is pretty nice too and I’ll put a picture of the showroom down below. But I’ll be straight on this one… I don’t get Iowa audiences. I try not to be the “They just don’t…
The Layover in Oakland is one of those places where you can never count on the audience to be super consistent. Sometimes big, sometimes small. Sometimes way into it, sometimes not. And that presents an interesting challenge for a comedian, simply because we have to adapt to whatever is going on right then. So for…
On Sunday November 10th, I’m performing at a benefit event for R.I.S.E. – and organization working on changing the statute of limitations laws on child abuse cases. I think we can both agree that pedophiles shouldn’t get away with the things they do, yeah? As you can see in the poster, it’s going to be…
Ok, I’ll admit my dressing room was not on the ceiling with the disco balls. I snapped that picture because I like Hidden Mickeys. But let me explain. The Stud is a gay bar in San Francisco. Not that it mattered in this case because there wasn’t much of anybody there. But I went into…
Despite the rather uninteresting bathroom I had to get dressed in, I was pretty excited for this gig. Why? Well, I’ve been playing the Crow’s Nest for years. First as an MC. Then worked my way up to feature. And this show was my first time headlining there. I’ve never done a lot of MC…
So on the last day of the World Series of Comedy in Las Vegas, I started coming down with a head cold. Sunday’s drive home was pretty miserable. And Monday I had a headlining gig at the Tower Grill in Concord. Fortunately, it’s a really small, intimate show, with no more than a couple dozen…
The World Series of Comedy is a super great event. Yes, it’s a comedy competition, which I generally don’t like. But this one ends up being kind of like summer camp for comedians. Besides the shows the public gets to see there are also workshops about the biz and fun stuff like a poker tournament…
I had planned on writing about the top 10 goals on my career bucket list. Turns out there aren’t 10. There are just 3. I figure any other goals would be a lead up to these three anyway. And of course, these are just the career goals. There are others having to do finances, possessions,…
Sometimes you get on a good run of shows and think, “Yep, on my way now. This will never end.” Which, of course, makes you (ie. me) a moron. The last time I played Melt Cafe, the place was jam packed (it’s pretty tiny to begin with), and it was so hot in there the…
A cafe/restaurant in a college/hippy town in Northern California? Of course the bathroom looks like this…. Great show though.. Super engaged audience of about 80 people, including two girls up front that laughed at everything that came out of my mouth from the moment I set foot on stage and never let up. And then…
Spartan and yet with a classy-ish beer sign for a mirror. I wonder how many drunks and stood in that mirror wondering why there are so many lines on their face. Station 55 in Gilroy is a really comfortable little room to do comedy in. 30 people and it’s a full house. For the most…
For the most part, I’ve taken to watching TV shows after they finish their run. Then there’s no waiting for a new season and losing sleep over a cliffhanger. Mostly because I find it exceedingly dumb to lose sleep over a TV show. Right now I’m in the midst of both Lost and The Office. …
Well, definitely a step up in the dressing room arena here. It’s still a bathroom of course. The sink and toilet are just out of frame. This is at Wine Tyme in the little beach town of Capitola, CA, near Santa Cruz. A tiny little wine bar. The show itself was great for the people…
As you may have sussed out from my regular mentions of Star Wars and Disney stuff in my show and online, I lean a good bit to the geek side. (Come to the geek side, Luke…). And recently I made the acquaintance of Amy Ratcliffe who runs and writes for a bunch of cool geek…
It occurred to me last night that you can kind of track a performer’s career by the quality of their dressing room. Of course, there’s no such thing as a super nice dressing room that I’ve yet to see. No matter how prestigious the venue, the dressing room is usually fairly run down and utilitarian….
I started working on a new song recently called “Super Dan” and I’m just getting down to recording it. Thought I’d do up a little acoustic version video for you to check out. Love to hear your feedback on it. This song is so new that I can’t yet play it and sing it at…
I was reflecting on childhood music recitals this morning. I had to do them when I was a kid. And I was a pretty shy little kid. The idea of getting up in front of a bunch of people and doing something that might involve mistakes was not my idea of fun. Originally I was…
I get out to Las Vegas usually a couple times a year to perform. And still my favorite Las Vegas casino name is the Ellis Island Casino. It’s the perfect name for a casino because both casinos and the original Ellis Island gave the same message. “The promise of financial freedom followed by years of…
After my show last night, I was doing a little playing in my studio to wind down. Decided to whip up a little cover of Butch Walker’s new song “All The Love You Need”. It’ll be included in the documentary coming out about him next month called “Out Of Focus”. This is one of those…
Alrighty… It’s time for ye olde biannual Disney D23 Expo wrap-up. As always, some good, some not so great stuff. But overall, a fun experience. First off, I’m not a company boy type of Disney fan. I don’t go to these events to buy every little “collectible” trinket or gawk at celebrity appearances or gather…
I’m headed for the Disney D23 Expo next week, so I’ve got a bit of Disney on the brain. Plus my trip there will be followed by shows in LA and Las Vegas, so it oughta be a hell of at trip. 🙂 One of my favorite Disney things over the last couple years has…
I have to admit, I’m feeling a little disenchanted with the human race today. Some days the pettiness and stupidity get to you. To let’s go with that vibe and laugh at the stupid people, shall we? Here’s 5 things that will dissuade you from thinking humans are the highest form of life. 1….
As Comic-Con prepares to fire off a nerdgasm of epic proportions this week, I’ll be enjoying it from afar because I’ve got shows to do this weekend. Before the internet, you had to geek out on your own. And if you found a few friends that were into Star Wars or Dungeons and Dragons or…
