I was doing a show at Mission City in Santa Clara last year. Before the show, the talent booker, Matt, told me his friend Maria was coming to the show to hang out with him. While I was onstage performing my song “Geeks Don’t Care”, I saw a bit of smooching happening behind the sound…

One of the things I learned in from my recent survey results is that people have trouble getting to shows either because of the time and hassle involved with getting there, or that there just aren’t any shows coming to their town. So as promised, I’m starting a weekly 15-minute live streaming concert series called…
Alrighty, here’s the second “name your own price” release, “I Know I Shouldn’t Say This, But…” This album includes some of my most popular songs: “LCW”, “Asshole”, and “Hey Little Goth Girl”, plus a couple live tracks and 30 minutes of bonus video footage. You name the price for it and it’s all yours! Yes,…
As promised in my recent survey results, I’m going to be switching over to a NYOP price model for downloading my comedy and music from my website. And yep, that includes free if you want to be cheap like that. Having as many people as possible seeing and hearing my work is the important thing. …
I thought today I’d continue my series of “Boobs I Haven’t Seen” after my recent post about the lady who only wanted me to lie about showing me her boobs. Years ago, I used to play the Borders Books circuit. They used to have indie artists perform in their cafes. It was a nice gesture…
There’s been plenty of news coming out of Coachella over the weekend. And if the outrageous success of acts like The Swedish House Mafia or the appearance by a long-dead Tupac Shakur is any sign, our business of show is in for more groundbreaking changes. Strangely, the hologram stuff is exciting to me. Not because…
I’ve done a lot of awesome shows. I’ve done a lot of really bad shows. This particular one was a really awesome bad show. It was February 10th, 1997. I only know that because I googled the bill and someone actually has it listed on a webpage. That makes me think that person doesn’t get…
I was saddened to hear of Robert Sherman’s passing today. For someone who’s a Disney nut and a songwriter, you can’t help but be influenced by the Sherman Brothers catalog. And personally, I think it’s a huge achievement to written one of the most loved and most hated songs of all time, “It’s A Small…
The first show of my Comedy Lab series in Santa Clara, CA is coming up on Saturday March 10th. If you’re in the area, make sure to come by for a great evening of comedy and music. The purpose of the show is to give performers and place to try material and performance styles they…
Something happened a few years ago that taught me a little lesson about perception. I was at a music convention in Los Angeles. It’s one I’d been to many times before and I knew most of the artists there well. Next door to our convention was some other meeting thing that looked way less interesting. …
I’m sure you have gotten a zillion emails about holiday sales. Black-this, Cyber-that. I’m a contrarian by nature, so I thought I’d try something different: Giving away large quantities of stuff for the holidays. 🙂 So starting today thru 12/24, you can gift one of my albums to anyone you’d like for no money. AND you…
Every December all the media talking heads start putting out their lists of the bests and worsts of the last year. I decided to try something different and look into the future. Today is December 9th, 2011. Let’s get to the soothsayin’ and see how right I am a year from now… Probably not very,…
A few days ago I started writing about the songs that I use as a swipe file for my own songs. Someone once said, “Blatant rip-offs are the sincerest form of flattery.” Or something like that. 😉 I was never good at copying other people’s work anyway. It’s why I was never in a cover…
Every songwriter has a list like this. It’s hearing a song that makes us go “Damn! Why didn’t I think of that?!” that makes us continue to write, always looking for the holy grail of songs. Or the next holy grail anyway. Once difference between just liking a song and being influenced by a song…
I spent all of today driving. And I like driving. Especially through northernmost California and up the Oregon coast like today. And the shows tonight and the rest of this week will be fantastic. The problem is I can’t accomplish much else while I’m driving. I can at least keep my brain engaged with podcasts…
Thought I’d drop a couple of cool music videos on your ears today… This first one is from a British Soul/Hip-Hop artist named Matt Henshaw. He’s so good he doesn’t even need a cool name. Anyway, I heard this song first on the CD Baby Music Discovery Podcast, called “The Deepest Cellar” from the album…
I was extremely bummed this morning to hear that Jani Lane had died. Warrant was a part of my formative teenage years. I was one of the few that could listen to Warrant, Death Angel, Poison, and Nuclear Assault in the same go. 🙂 Years ago I had front row tickets to see Warrant, Firehouse,…
There is a thin line between really cool and “oh my god, did that just really happen?” After finding the number 1 video on this list the other day, I decided to go hunting for some other weird/cool/bizarre/awesome Disney cover songs. Let the madness begin… 10. From SaJ Production comes this cover of “Part Of…
Dave Hooper over at MusicMarketing.com posted today about the Canadian band Living With Lion’s recent go around with the the Canadian government run FACTOR organization that fund and supports Canada’s music artists. A fantastic thing unto itself. Sort of like our NEA, but without the snob appeal. Anyway, LWL’s new album is called “Holy Shit”…
Once again, Seth Godin has put into words something that rattled around my brain but wouldn’t join into full sentences. His blog post, An End Of Magic, starts with Arthur C. Clarke’s famous quote that “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.” And Seth goes on to say that we know it’s all possible…
I just finished reading a really interesting post at Music Think Tank entitled “Farewell to the Casual Music Fan” . I always like to dig into contrarian thinking and this certainly goes against the grain of current music industry thought. In short, many people have floated the idea that a music artist can make a…
